
Things to know about SuhlIf you close your eyes, imagine a map of Germany and try to place your finger on the centre, you will almost always point to Suhl.
The city of Suhl (population approx. 41,000) is situated in the valley of the Steina, Lauter and Hasel on the southwest slope of the Thuringia forest, close to the Rennsteig.
The center of the city is worth a visit, with its valuable historical buildings. The Suhl Weapon Forge, located on the market place, bears witness to the centuries old tradition of the production of hunting and sporting guns.
Suhl can look back on a varied history. Archeological diggings have revealed human remains dating from approx. 2000 BC. Around the year 500 BC, the area of Suhl was populated by Celtic immigrants. They were primarily engaged in ore mining and processing. Ore mining, iron processing and salt extraction are among the oldest Suhl industries.
The city itself was first mentioned in 1318 AD. It was legally incorporated as a city in 1527. Suhl is the economic and administrative center of the South Thuringia region.
City Hall: the Suhl city hall is one of the most note-worthy buildings
Weapon Forging Monument with fountain:: the urban landmark is located in the center of the market place.
Law Courts on the market place: worth mentioning are the classic features of the building facade.
Church of St. Marien: was the first church in the city, built 1487 - 1491. It belongs to the unique examples of protestant Rokokko churches in Germany.
Antique Car Museum: over 1100 m² of floor space featuring ca. 180 exhibits are presented showing the history of Suhl vehicle production since 1896. In addition to many motor sports exhibits, there is the legendary AWO plus further products of Suhl two wheel vehicle technology; Friedrich-König-Straße 7.
